If you haven’t heard all ready the iconic Henri Bendel flagship store located on Fifth Avenue is closing at the end of the month. I paid one last visit to Bendel’s before the doors close. It has been interesting watching Bendel’s evolve over the past fourteen years that I have been living in New York City.
If you are not familiar with Henri Bendel’s this article from The New York Times will give you a good idea of the legacy. My first experience of Bendel’s over a decade ago was magnificent! The sprawling four levels filled with the most decadent clothing, accessories, beauty, travel and home goods.
Any Gossip Girl fans out there? The first season Elenor Waldorf (Blair’s mother) mentions that Bendel’s has picked up her spring collection. Ahh, the good old days.
There was even a chic cafe on the top level that overlooked Fifth Avenue. I remember taking myself on my birthday one year and feeling very glamorous.
Over the years, especially after the recession in 2008 I noticed a decline in Bendel’s. They stopped selling clothing and scaled back a lot on merchandise. Slowly they started closing the top floors of their NYC flagship (the chic cafe was the first to go – *sigh*).
Bendel’s would soon announce they were only focusing on accessories such as handbags, wallets, jewelry, etc. That being said, it came as no surprise when they announced they would be closing for good at the end of January.
That’s right everything is currently 60% off – if not more. If you are in or plan on visiting NYC before the end of the month be sure to stop by Henri Bendel at 712 Fifth Avenue (between 56th and 57th Street).
